20-26 Dec 2016: Rovaniemi - Kotitie B&B - Snowy Christmas - Northern Lights

It has been 2 months since my holiday ended. Life is back to usual, as well as back to the reality world. Time to back to work, work, work and work, as well as time to start saving money and planning for the next holiday :)

The stay at the Kotitie B&B was the best for our trip, good location, great fully furnished accommodation in wooden house, as well as the super hospitably host, Pekka. Not only the accommodation and host are great, the quiet and peacefulness neighborhood in the center of town was a bonus for our stay.

During our one week stay in Kotitie B&B, the surrounding was in white and everything covered with snow, and, the snow thickness was getting thicker and thicker by days. Love the white winter so much ;) ... Wish I can back to Kotitie B&B in future and have a longer stay, properly 1-2 months or a season?

Apart from the nice stay at Kotitie B&B, it's also an ideal location for the first time northern lights "hunters" like us. The location of Kotitie B&B is just 6-minutes walk away from the Arktikum and Ounasjoki riverside. The Ounasjoki riverside is one of the famous spots for northern lights viewing. You will never fail to see groups of people gather there patiently waiting for the northern lights, regardless how cold the weather ;)

In one of the evening, the northern lights came early than we expected. The host knocked at our door and telling us that the lights were out and dancing across the sky now. It was so sudden and my gear was not set up yet, therefore most of the stunning views were captured by eyes instead of my camera ;)

On the Christmas eve, we received an unexpected traditional Finnish Christmas dinner platter from the our great host. Thank you so much, Pekka.

Finnish Christmas Dinner

In Finland, the Christmas dinner is eaten on the Christmas Eve, December 24th. Families and friends gather together to share the warm, festive atmosphere of the evening and enjoy the various traditional Christmas dishes.

Oven-baked ham, root vegetable casseroles, mixed beetroot salad, liver casserole and pâtés, meat aspics, gravlax or smoked salmon, fish roe and herring dishes form the basis of the traditional Finnish Christmas dinner.

Perhaps the three most essential dishes on Finnish Christmas table are oven-baked ham, rutabaga casserole and mixed beetroot salad. Without the taste of these traditional dishes, there would be something missing in Finnish Christmas celebration.
